Rdio has opened to Aus and NZ, No One Cares
Personally, I don’t see subscription and streaming music providers working and definitely not in Australia. Using them, they’re pretty rad; choosing random songs out of my head I no longer own, maybe hearing something new. I remember using Pandora quite a bit before they shut up in Australia for licensing, and Last.fm had a similar thing going on. But I never relied on it and I can’t see any of these streaming guys, Rdio, Spotify included, being any great big success.
People don’t work like that. We’re not into streaming music. It’s our music, the music we listen to and own, it’s important. And this isn’t about belittling a product or medium that I’m involved in. I don’t think it does that. This is just the way people I know work and have always worked. That doesn’t mean there aren’t a bunch of people who revel in this kind of shit, but most people don’t and never will.
It’s like saying people will stop using their phones to speak to friends and only use Facebook. It sounds ideal - there are more functions and links and things to attach to your message and you can send it to specific people quickly and get responses and suggestions from outsiders and related ads from companies etc - but it’s still weird and distant. It holds no real value and the huge database of recommendations isn’t enough.
No one cares about recommendations, especially from a computer regarding music. You’ll take note if a friend says something, maybe you read a good review or a band you like wears a shirt. Most of the time - i.e. ALL OF THE TIME - you’ll hear the song first and then take note. At some guys house, at a gig, in a movie. Right?
That’s how music discovery works. Music is personal and that affects how people want to get new music. It also affects how they want to consume it, and streaming don’t cut it.
Plus subscription services look like they really don’t do anything for the artists, so we’ll probably all just stick with iTunes and Amazon and whatever else…
